Egypt, Alexandria. Philippus II as Caesar, 244-247. Tetradrachm (Silver, 22.76 mm, 12.81 g). Dated RY 2 (of Philippus I) = AD 244/5. M IOY ФIΛIΠΠOC K CЄB Draped and cuirassed bust of Philippus II as Caesar right. Rev. Helmeted Athena standing facing right towards a small Victory, she is holding in her left hand; a spear, in her right hand and a shield at her feet right; L B (date) across field. Geissen -. BMC -. Dattari -. Emmett 3583 (5). Extremely rare. Minted in full silver. Very Fine. We are still in the second year of the reign of Philip I the Arab (AD 144–145), with another extremely rare tetradrachm struck in the name of his son Philip, still Caesar at the time, using the same piedfort-style flan technique and, most notably, in solid silver—an exceptional and unusual occurrence that likely corresponds to some significant event that took place in that year, though it has yet to be identified. On the reverse shines the imposing figure of Athena Parthenos as a warrior, holding in her left hand a graceful little Victory who crowns her.
