Egypt, Alexandria. Constantius I as Caesar, 293-305. Tetradrachm. (Billon, 19.00 mm, 7.52 g). Dated RY 4 = AD 295/6. ΦΛA KωCTANTIOC K Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. Elpis advancing left, wearing chiton and peplos, holding a lotus flower in her outstretched right hand and rising with her left a robe hem; in field, L Δ (date). Geissen 3353. On the excellent obverse of this tetradrachm can be recognized a realistic and physiognomic portrait of Constantius I, a rare example in a coin of the last year of the autonomous Alexandrian series. On the reverse is Elpis, Hope, also portrayed in the tetradrachms nrs. 339 and 340 of this collection: the deity is auspicious for the complex management of the empire during the tetrarchy.
