Banner Artemide LXIV
Lot # 649
Spain. AV Button with coat of arms, c. 14th-15th century. Obv. · (salamander?) · MIGAL PERE. Circular quartered coat of arms, with a lily in the first and fourth quarters and a bird facing left in the third and fourth. AV. 5.56 g. 26.5 mm. An object of great charm and interest. Slightly bent. Difficult to attribute, this button must certainly have belonged to a person of high rank, given the personalization of an object of purely ornamental use. If we accept the interpretation of the inscription as read, we may be looking at a vulgarization of the possible name of the owner, which could be read as Miguel Perez, probably of Spanish origin. The fact that no comparisons have been found for either the coat of arms or the name suggests that it may be a nobleman or wealthy merchant or local prelate who left no trace of himself in the wider aristocratic landscape. Based on the style of writing, the date could be around the 14th-15th century.
