Order of St John – Officer’s Breast Jewel (Early 20th Century) (42.30 mm, 22.17 g). Maker: Toye & Co., London Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, date-letter early 1900s) A refined and elegant Order of St John Officer’s Jewel, crafted in sterling silver with gilt finish and white enamel, suspended from its original black ribbed ribbon. This piece represents the classic insignia style used in the early decades of the 20th century and is distinguished by its crisp enamelwork and detailed gilt ornamentation. The insignia takes the form of an eight-pointed Maltese Cross, the arms rendered in smooth white enamel bordered in gilt. Between the arms appear finely modelled gilt lions and unicorns—traditional heraldic supporters associated with the Order’s British Royal Charter. The suspension is through a gilt bow element, attaching the cross to a broad black ribbon, surmounted by an engraved gilt top bar of foliate design. Reverse The reverse shows the clean geometry of the cross construction, with the gilt finish intact. Clearly struck British hallmarks confirm: Sterling silver (lion passant) London assay (leopard’s head) Maker: TOYE & Co., LONDON Date-letter corresponding to early 20th century manufacture The long pin-back fitting on the top bar remains fully intact and functional. Condition: Very Fine. Enamel clean and undamaged; gilt metal with soft patina; ribbon in good condition with only light handling creases; reverse hallmarks sharp; suspension and pin fittings secure. An attractive and high-quality example of an Order of St John Officer’s Jewel, admired for its elegant enamelled cross, detailed supporters, and early 20th-century hallmarking. A desirable piece for collectors of chivalric, fraternal, and Masonic-associated insignia.
