Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution – Steward Jewel, 1919 (28.05 mm, 16.96 g).
Maker: C. Kenning & Son, London
Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1918–19)
A fine post–World War I Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution (RMBI) Steward Jewel, dated 1919, crafted in sterling silver with rich enamel and suspended from its original deep crimson ribbon. This early interwar jewel is an excellent example of Kenning’s high-quality regalia workmanship.
The suspension bar is gilt and enamelled in dark blue with the inscription STEWARD, from which hangs a ribbed crimson ribbon of strong colour. Below this is a red-enamelled coronet, marking the jewel as an official RMBI fundraising honour.
The circular medallion features a white enamel Tudor rose at its centre, overlaid with a blue-bordered shield bearing a rampant red lion on a gold field. Surrounding this emblem is a blue enamel band reading:
ROYAL MASONIC BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION
The year 1919 appears at the bottom of the medallion.
Reverse
The reverse is stamped:
C. KENNING & SON
LONDON
and carries full British silver hallmarks:
Sterling silver (lion passant)
London assay (leopard’s head)
Date-letter for 1918–19
Maker’s mark: CKS (C. Kenning & Son)
Two small screws secure the enamel medallion to its frame, as typical of RMBI construction of this period.
Condition: Fine. Ribbon with some age wear but retains strong colour; enamel with minor losses at edges but overall intact and attractive; gilt areas toned; reverse showing natural patina; hallmarks clear; suspension fitting intact.
A historically appealing post-WWI RMBI Steward Jewel, valued for its early date, silver construction, and classic Tudor rose design. A strong example for collectors of Masonic benevolent regalia.
