Masonic War Service Commemorative Jewel, 1914–1918 (46.36 x 37.70 mm, 28.94 g).
Maker: A.G.W. (hallmarked)
Hallmarked Sterling Silver (British, c. 1919–1920)
A striking and well-crafted Masonic commemorative jewel issued to honour service or support during the First World War, dated 1914–1918. Executed in solid silver with sculptural detail and suspended from a deep blue ribbon, this piece represents one of the most symbolically rich wartime jewels produced for the Masonic fraternity.
The obverse features a powerful allegorical figure—an angelic guardian or winged personification of Peace—standing before a temple façade, framed by laurel wreath elements symbolising victory and remembrance. Extending to either side are rectangular panels bearing the dates 1914 and 1918, marking the duration of the Great War.
Above the central figure is a stylised square and compasses, integrating the jewel firmly into Masonic tradition.
Reverse
The reverse is engraved:
BRO. W. C. ATKINSON
with additional British silver hallmarks along the lower edge confirming manufacture in sterling silver. The maker’s mark A.G.W. is clearly struck. The original suspension fitting remains intact.
A period paper label survives on the reverse, likely an old collector or lodge inventory notation.
Condition: Very Fine. Silver surfaces show even age patina; sculptural detail strong and well-preserved; original ribbon in excellent colour and condition; reverse lightly marked consistent with age; suspension bar sound.
An evocative and collectible post–World War I Masonic commemorative jewel, notable for its silver construction, symbolic imagery, and engraved attribution. Highly desirable to collectors of Masonic regalia and Great War commemorative medals.
