Maker: Spencer, London (hallmarked)
Material: Sterling Silver, Gilt & Enamel
Period: Early 20th Century
A superb and highly distinctive Founder’s Jewel for the 33rd Middlesex Artillery Lodge No. 2942, crafted in sterling silver with gilt details and enamelled insignia. Regimental-themed lodge jewels are among the most sought-after in Masonic regalia, and this example is an excellent representation of the tradition linking Freemasonry with British Territorial and Volunteer units.
The jewel is suspended from a deep navy-blue silk ribbon with grey edging and a bold red zig-zag central motif—mirroring artillery colours. A gilt miniature field gun is mounted upon the ribbon, emphasising the lodge’s military identity. Above sits a white-enamelled bar inscribed:
FOUNDER
The pendant takes the form of a finely executed five-pointed star with radiating rays, surmounted by a Tudor-style crown. At the centre, a circular white-enamel band encloses a red ground bearing the crossed-guns insignia of the Royal Artillery and the inscription:
33rd Middlesex Artillery Lodge No. 2942
The reverse retains the original pin fitting and carries full London hallmarks together with the maker’s name SPENCER LONDON, confirming quality manufacture.
Condition: Very Fine. Gilt elements bright with light age toning; enamel fully intact; ribbon well-preserved with only slight wear to edges; reverse shows even patina and strong, legible hallmarks.
