Royal Ark Mariner / Mark Degree Jewel – c. 1920s–30s (Cream Ribbon Variant) (37.00 x 24.37 mm, 16.36 g).
Maker: G. Kenning & Son, London (hallmarked)
Material: Sterling Silver, Gilt, and Enamel
Period: Early 20th Century
A handsome and well-made Royal Ark Mariner or Mark Degree jewel, crafted in sterling silver with bright gilt detailing and elegant enamel work. This example features the cream ribbon variant, less commonly encountered than the crimson ribbon form.
The jewel is suspended from three ornate floral-engraved gilt bars, giving it an impressive vertical presence. The ribbon retains its original cream colour, showing minor period wear but still structurally sound.
The medallion displays the traditional interlaced hexagram enclosing the virtues WISDOM, STRENGTH, BEAUTY, along with the central emblem of the Ark. The Latin motto encircling the device reads:
DEO ARCA FRATRIBUS HONOR FIDELITAS BENEFICENTIA
(“To God, the Ark, the Brethren — Honour, Fidelity, Benevolence”)
The reverse carries full and clear British hallmarks, together with the G. KENNING & SON stamp, confirming silver manufacture and London assay.
Condition: Fine to Very Fine. Gilding even and attractive; enamel clean and undamaged; ribbon aged with some fraying but intact; reverse with clear hallmarks and original fittings. A strong example of a desirable early 20th-century degree jewel.
