Riverside Lodge No. 4201 – Founder’s Jewel, 1921 (46.31 x 26.24 mm, 46.35 g).
Maker: Kenning & Son Ltd., London
Material: Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1921)
A beautifully crafted Founder’s Jewel for Riverside Lodge No. 4201, dated 1921, executed in sterling silver with rich vitreous enamel and its original deep-blue moiré ribbon. This jewel is an excellent example of early 20th-century lodge regalia, displaying both symbolic craftsmanship and a finely hand-painted scenic cartouche.
The upper bar, in bright blue enamel, bears the inscription FOUNDER, with an applied red enamel date tablet 1921. Suspended below is a gilt Masonic architectural emblem, representing the lodge’s foundation and symbolic structure.
The main jewel is surmounted by a small five-pointed star device and features a detailed pictorial enamel roundel depicting a riverbank landscape, with water, foliage, and distant hills — the personalised emblem of Riverside Lodge. This is framed by classical columns resting on the traditional Masonic chequered pavement. A blue enamel band reads:
RIVERSIDE (upper)
LODGE No. 4201 (lower)
Reverse
The reverse retains its original pin and hinge fittings and is fully hallmarked for London, 1921, with the maker’s mark K&Son Ltd (Kenning & Son), one of the most prolific and respected manufacturers of Masonic jewels.
Condition: Very Fine. Enamel extremely well preserved with strong colour; silver with pleasing patina; ribbon original and sound though showing mild age softening; hallmarks clear and legible. A highly attractive jewel with an exceptionally charming hand-painted centre.
A desirable and early Founder’s Jewel, valued for its pictorial enamel, symbolic architectural devices, and early inter-war date.
