Royal Masonic Institution for Boys – Steward Jewel, 1922 (Essex Province) (39.00 mm, 15.56 g).
Maker: Spencer & Co., London
Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1921–22)
A highly attractive Royal Masonic Institution for Boys (RMIB) Steward Jewel, dated 1922, crafted in sterling silver with multi-coloured enamel and suspended from its original pale blue moiré ribbon. This example features the Essex provincial badge, making it particularly desirable among regional RMIB collectors.
The gilt and blue-enamelled top bar is inscribed STEWARD, supporting the broad ribbon, which bears a finely detailed enamel shield of three seaxes (Saxon knives) — the traditional arms of Essex.
Below hangs the large circular medallion surrounded by a decorative castellated border. The blue enamel band reads:
ROYAL MASONIC INSTN FOR BOYS – 1922
The central heraldic shield is beautifully executed, quartered with symbols including fleurs-de-lis, castle towers, a bull’s head, and other regional emblems, all set against a white enamel field. The craftsmanship reflects the post-WWI refinement typical of Spencer & Co., a respected manufacturer of Masonic regalia.
