Royal Masonic Institution for Girls – Festival Jewel, 1923 (37.13 mm, 14.93 g).
Maker: Toye & Co., London
Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1923–24)
An impressive and richly detailed Royal Masonic Institution for Girls (RMIG) Festival Jewel dated 1923, crafted in sterling silver with extensive multicoloured enamel. This early interwar jewel is among the more elaborate RMIG issues, featuring a full heraldic achievement rendered with exceptional precision.
The oval medallion presents a magnificent enamelled shield divided into numerous quarterings representing affiliated counties, families, and benefactors associated with the Institution. The shield is flanked by two silver supporters—gracefully modelled hounds—each wearing a gilt collar. Above the shield rests a coronet supporting a stag’s head crest with the motto ONWARD.
Encircling the heraldry is a white enamel band inscribed:
ROYAL MASONIC INST. FOR GIRLS
Below, a scroll bears the Latin motto CANDEO SED NON NOCENS (“I shine, but do not harm”), and the date 1923 appears at the base within a small gilt-framed enamel cartouche.
Reverse
The reverse retains the original construction plate, secured with its period screws, showing expected age toning.
Clear British silver hallmarks confirm:
Sterling silver (lion passant)
London assay (leopard’s head)
Date-letter for 1923–24
Maker: TOYE & Co., LONDON (stamped clearly on the reverse mount)
Condition: Very Fine. Enamel crisp and colourful with minor age-related wear; silver surfaces with gentle patina; reverse construction plate toned but complete; suspension loop (if originally supplied) removed or absent—typical for brooch-style RMIG badges of this period.
A highly decorative and sought-after early RMIG Festival Jewel, notable for its elaborate heraldry, strong enamelling, and clear 1923 hallmarks. A premium example for collectors of Masonic and institutional regalia.
