Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution – Steward Jewel, 1925 (31.97 mm, 45.93 g).
Maker: Fattorini & Sons, London & Bradford
Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1925–26)
A handsome and early Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution (RMBI) Steward Jewel dated 1925, executed in enamel and gilt on a sterling silver base, and suspended from a deep crimson ribbon characteristic of the period. This example displays the bold heraldry and fine workmanship associated with Fattorini’s interwar regalia.
The upper bar features an enamelled STEWARD panel topped by a Tudor-style crown motif. The central ribbon is adorned with a bright blue enamel shield bearing three wheat sheaves, a symbol traditionally associated with generosity and benefaction. Below this is a small red heraldic lion applied as a separate ornamental device.
The main medallion is circular, with a broad white enamel band reading:
ROYAL MASONIC BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION – 1925
At the centre is a decorative shield displaying a rampant red lion against a white field, framed by elaborate scrollwork and surmounted by a blue heraldic element.
Reverse
The reverse retains the original construction plate and mounting screws, showing natural age patina.
Along the lower edge appear clear British hallmarks confirming:
Sterling silver (lion passant)
London assay (leopard’s head)
Date-letter corresponding to 1925–26
Maker’s mark: Fattorini & Sons
The upper clasp is stamped FATTORINI & SONS — LONDON and FITTING ALL METAL, indicating the jeweller’s standard fittings.
Condition: Fine. Ribbon with fraying and thread loss toward the lower edge; enamel on front largely intact with strong colour; gilding toned from age; reverse showing oxidation typical of 1920s silver; suspension fittings secure.
An attractive and collectible example of an early RMBI Steward Jewel, notable for its heraldic devices, silver construction, and early interwar date. Highly desirable among collectors of Masonic regalia and institutional jewels.
