Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution – Steward Jewel, 1927 (45.09 mm, 15.95 g). Maker: Spence, London Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1927–28) A handsome and well-preserved Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution (RMBI) Steward Jewel dated 1927, executed in gilt and enamel on a sterling silver foundation. This jewel displays the decorative elegance characteristic of interwar RMBI pieces. Suspended from a deep crimson ribbon, the jewel features at its head a gilt scrollwork bar inscribed STEWARD. Below this appears a finely modelled enamelled device depicting a recumbent stag, flanked by the date panels 19 and 27. The main shield-shaped medallion carries the RMBI arms: a blue enamel chief bearing traditional Masonic emblems, above a white field displaying a palm tree with a small heraldic shield at its base. The enamel colours remain vivid, framed by gilt scroll flourishes. Reverse The reverse is stamped SPENCE LONDON, confirming manufacture by the respected regalia maker. Clear London silver hallmarks along the lower reverse indicate: Sterling silver (lion passant) London assay (leopard’s head) Date-letter “m” = 1927–28 The suspension fittings remain original and fully functional. Condition: Fine to Very Fine. Ribbon with minor fraying but strong colour; enamel clean and largely intact; gilt surfaces with attractive age patina; reverse with age toning consistent with silver of the period; suspension secure. A pleasing and collectible example of a 1920s RMBI Steward Jewel, valued for its silver construction, clear date, and classic enamelled heraldry. A desirable piece for collectors of Masonic regalia and institutional service jewels.
