Quadragesimus Secundus – Presentation Masonic Jewel (Gold, 39.34 x 33.70 mm, 20.47 g).
In a black leather fitted case, gilt-tooled to lid, by L. Simpson & Co., London. 1933-1934.
A fine gold and enamel presentation jewel, suspended from its original maroon-and-silver moiré ribbon and topped by a gilt bar inscribed QUADRAGESIMUS SECUNDUS (“Forty-Second”). The ribbon is mounted with an enamelled armorial device: a central shield beneath a starry chief, flanked by two eagles, and bearing the well-known motto scroll:
NEC QUAERERE • NEC SPERNERE • HONOREM
(“Neither to seek nor to despise honour.”)
Suspended below is a substantial gold Square with ornate bright-cut and engraved decoration. From the square hangs a small gold pendant seal/fob with circular lettered device to face.
Reverse: The reverse retains its original brooch fitting and suspension. The square is engraved with a full presentation inscription naming the recipient (a W. Bro.), together with lodge/office details and a date (as visible on the photograph). The pendant also shows a stamped/engraved emblem to reverse.
Condition: Very good. Enamel generally strong with minor age wear; ribbon with light creasing and wear; gold with typical surface marks; fittings secure. Case with expected age handling.
