Royal Masonic Institution for Boys – Steward Jewel, 1935 (32.81 mm, 26.77 g).
Maker: A. Smith & Sons, London
Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1934–35)
A handsome Royal Masonic Institution for Boys (RMIB) Steward Jewel, dated 1935, crafted in sterling silver with gilt and enamel decoration, and suspended from its original pale blue moiré ribbon. This mid-1930s example is notable for its elegant heraldry and finely executed enamel surfaces.
The upper suspension bar is gilt and enamelled in white with the word STEWARD, framed by stylised scrollwork. The ribbon is adorned with a gilt and blue enamel oval motif depicting three wheatsheaves within a laurel wreath — symbolising prosperity and regional affiliation.
Below hangs the crown-surmounted medallion, its outer blue enamel band reading:
ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS – 1935
The central shield is beautifully detailed with quartered heraldic arms, including lions, fleurs-de-lis, and chequered fields in red, blue, and gold. The border pattern surrounding the arms is rendered in gilt and textured for visual depth.
Reverse
The reverse bears full London silver hallmarks:
Sterling silver (lion passant)
London assay (leopard’s head)
Date-letter for 1934–35
Maker’s mark: A.S.S (A. Smith & Sons, London)
Two screw-mounted fixings secure the medallion to the silver backing plate, as typical of quality RMIB jewels of the period.
Condition: Fine to Very Fine. Ribbon with honest age wear but intact; enamel vibrant and largely free of loss; gilt elements toned attractively; reverse clean with strong hallmarks; suspension fittings original and functional.
A classic and desirable 1930s RMIB Steward Jewel, notable for its heraldic complexity, silver construction, and crisp enamel. A solid example for collectors of institutional Masonic jewels from the interwar period.
