Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution – Steward Jewel, 1940 (32.90 mm, 19.76 g).
Maker: (London silversmith; hallmarks present)
Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1939–40)
A well-preserved Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution (RMBI) Steward Jewel dated 1940, executed in gilt metal with rich blue and white enamel, suspended from its original deep crimson ribbon. Produced at the outset of the Second World War, this jewel represents one of the early wartime RMBI issues, notable for its elegant heraldry and fine enamelwork.
The upper bar bears a black enamel inscription STEWARD, attached to a period crimson ribbon of strong colour and good integrity. The oval medallion features a blue enamel border inscribed:
ROYAL MASONIC BENEVT. INSTN.
At centre is the institution’s heraldic shield: three silver stags’ heads on a black field, surmounted by a coronet with red and gold enamel. Beneath the shield, a ribbon scroll bears the Latin motto CAVENDO TUTUS (“Safe through caution”). The date 1940 is prominently displayed at the base in blue enamel.
Reverse
The reverse retains the construction plate and original mounting screws.
Along the lower edge of the gilt frame are clear British silver hallmarks confirming:
Sterling silver (lion passant)
London assay (leopard’s head)
Date-letter for 1939–40
Maker’s mark (well struck)
The suspension loop and clasp remain complete and functional.
Condition: Very Fine. Enamel bright and undamaged; gilding with attractive age tone; ribbon with light creasing but strong colour; reverse showing typical patina from silver and gilt interaction; suspension fittings secure.
An appealing wartime example of an RMBI Steward Jewel, valued for its silver construction, bold heraldic shield, and clear 1940 date. Highly collectible among students of Masonic regalia and institutional festival jewels.
