Royal Masonic Institution for Boys – Steward Jewel, 1940 (Kent “Invicta”) (34.02 mm, 27.80 g).
Maker: Kenning & Son Ltd., London
Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1939–40)
A highly attractive and regionally distinctive Royal Masonic Institution for Boys (RMIB) Steward Jewel, dated 1940, crafted in sterling silver with vibrant enamel and gilt accents. This example incorporates the Kent “Invicta” rearing horse emblem, marking the wearer as a steward representing the Province of Kent.
Suspended from a pale blue moiré ribbon, the jewel is surmounted by a gilt bar enamelled STEWARD. The ribbon bears a finely cast silver rearing horse above a scroll inscribed INVICTA, the traditional motto of Kent meaning “Unconquered.” Below the device sits the small rectangular year panel 1940.
The large oval medallion is richly detailed, with a blue enamel outer ring reading:
THE ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS
At the centre is the institution’s full heraldic achievement: a quartered shield supported by two hounds, surmounted by a coronet and crest, with radiant background rays. Beneath the shield lies the motto scroll:
VIRTUS INVIDIAM VINCIT
(“Virtue conquers envy”)
A small circular enamel emblem incorporating the square and compasses completes the design.
Reverse
The reverse is stamped:

LONDON
and bears full British silver hallmarks:

Maker’s mark of Kenning & Son Ltd.
Two screw fittings secure the heraldic assembly to the frame, as typical for RMIB construction.
Condition: Very Fine. Ribbon lightly age-toned but intact; enamel bright and undamaged; silver and gilt elements crisp with gentle patina; hallmarks sharp; suspension and fittings secure.
A desirable and regionally significant Kent “Invicta” RMIB Steward Jewel, notable for its wartime date, silver construction, and strong heraldic presentation. Representative of the finest mid-20th-century RMIB fundraising regalia.
