Roman warrior standing left; placing his hand on the head of a citizen; behind, attendant standing left and holding rods; in exergue, PROVOCO. Cr. 301/1; B. (Porcia) 4; RRSC D 100; RBW -. AR. 3.98 g. 18 mm. Cabinet tone. Almost full weight; slightly off centre. Good VF. The peculiar reverse of this denarius shows one of the oldest Roman law institutions. The provocatio was a guarantee recognized to the citizen who, condemned by the magistrate to the death penalty or to pay a fine exceeding a certain amount, could appeal to the people (provocare ad populum) so that they could pass the sentence definitive, which could be of condemnation or acquittal.

A Palm Branch, Not a Feather
Lot # 248 - Reverse Palm Branch series. AR Denarius, uncertain mint, 202 BC. Obv. Helmeted head of Roma right; behind, X. Rev. Luna in biga right; below, feather (or palm branch?); in linear frame, ROMA. Cr. 163/1. RRSC B141. AR. 3.63 g. 19 mm. Well centred and good. Minor earthy deposits. Good VF. The symbol in this series is commonly referred to as a feather. However, this interpretation is debatable. A recent study by Debernardi (RRSC Vol. 1) reexamines this symbol, proposing it to be a palm branch instead. The palm branch could be considered a symbol of victory, possibly used on these final issues dated to the end of the Second Punic War.
