This AR Denarius, minted during 37-36 BC under Sextus Pompeius, offers a captivating narrative deeply intertwined with the historical and mythological fabric of ancient Sicily. On the obverse, the Pharos of Messana dominates, a testament to the island's pivotal maritime position. This iconic lighthouse, surmounted by Neptune, underscores Messana's role as a beacon for sailors navigating the Mediterranean's perilous waters, while also symbolizing prosperity and guidance. Conversely, the reverse presents the formidable figure of Scylla, a mythical sea monster deeply ingrained in Sicilian lore. With a rudder firmly grasped in both hands, Scylla serves as a poignant reminder of the maritime hazards faced by ancient seafarers, embodying the dangers lurking in Sicily's coastal waters. Beyond its numismatic value, this coin serves as a poignant reflection of Sicily's multifaceted history.
