Lotto n. 396 - L. MARCIUS PHILIPPUS. Denarius (57 BC). Rome. Obv: ANCVS. Diademed head of Ancus Marcius right; lituus to left.Rev: PHILIPPVS / AQVAM R. Equestrian statue on aqueduct right; flower below statue.Crawford 425/1; RBW 1524.This denarius was issued in 56 BC by L. Marcius Philippus in honor of his ancestor Q. Marcius Rex. On the obverse, the coin depicts the head of the fourth king of Rome, Ancus Marcius, identified by the legend, from whom the Marcia gens claimed to descend and who, according to a legend (reported by Pliny the Elder), was the first to provide an aqueduct to the city. The reverse depicts an equestrian statue (Marcius Rex) placed on an arched structure, clearly identified as an aqueduct by the legend. The aqueduct depicted here was built in 144 BC by Marcius Rex (to whom the statue refers), and supplied water to many areas of Rome. It was over 90 km long and mostly underground. As was common in the Republican period, the designs on both sides are purely propagandistic, aimed at celebrating the gens to which the monetary magistrate belonged, with references to mythical and historical ancestors, legitimizing his personal ambitions. Lotto n. 384 - Q. POMPONIUS MUSA. Denarius (56 BC). Rome. Obv: Laureate head of Apollo right; sandal to left.Rev: Q POMPONI / MVSA. Thalia standing left, holding comic mask and resting elbow upon column to right.Crawford 410/9b; RBW -.Thalia is one of the nine Muses, daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (goddess of memory). Her name means “she who flourishes” or “the flourishing one” and she is the Muse of comedy and idyllic poetry, which appeal to the simplest, most ironic and lively side of humanity. She is often depicted with a comic mask in her hand, symbolizing comic theater, and with an ivy crown, referring to the world of nature and wine. Sometimes she holds a shepherd's crook, representing bucolic poetry. Unlike other more solemn or dramatic Muses, Thalia calls for lightness and smiles. In classical times, those seeking inspiration to write satires or comedies invoked Thalia. Condition: Very fine.Weight: 3.94 g. Diameter: 18 mm. Estimate: € 100

Neptune, holding reins and brandishing trident, driving sea-chariot drawn by two hippocamps right; D above.Crawford 399/1a; RBW 1440.Amphitrite, one of the Nereids, was Posidon's official bride, with a role akin to that of Hera to Zeus. She, at first, was not available for marriage and took refuge on the Atlas mountain. But then she was persuaded by a delegation headed by a Dolphin, whose memory Poseidon immortalised in a constellation out of gratitude. Lady of the underwater caves, Amphitrite kept there jewels worthy of the queen of the sea, and generally left her sumptuous flats only to look after the countless and monstrous animals of the ocean depths, subjected to her. The deity depicted on this coin must more properly be identified as Salacia, Neptune's bride, who in Rome was essentially identified with Amphitrite. Condition: Near very fine.Weight: 3.12 g.
