Head of Vulcan right, wearing wreathed pileus and with tongs on shoulder. Rev. Furnacator in short tunic, fallus hanging down, advancing right and holding shovel; before, askos. HN Italy -. Stannard 2007 (LOC), series 59, no. 618 - 23.041 (only one specimen). Stannard, "Apollo and the little man with the strigils, and the Italo-Baetican iconography", 2020, pl.5, n. 12. Old cabinet toned. Minor areas of flattening. Otherwise, Good Very Fine. Embarrassingly Rare - possibly the second specimen known - with no example recorded at auction in the last quarter of a century. From a collection of ancient lead tokens, assembled since the late 1960s. This rare pseudo-coin belongs to an unofficial Italic series studied by Clive Stannard, first identified in the river deposits of the Liri near Minturnae. These pieces are notable for their striking and unusual iconography. On the obverse of this specimen appears Vulcan, unmistakably associated with hard manual labor. The reverse features a seminude stoker at work, his short tunic lifted to reveal his genitals - a raw, almost defiant image of the physical reality of toil. Related bronze issues from the same series depict similar figures, as well as strigils and other implements of the gymnasium or, more precisely, the bath complex. These pieces reflect themes of work, purification, and public life. Communal baths - often founded by generous benefactors - anchor the social and ritual context in which these tokens circulated. They speak to a world of trade, routine, and collective identity shaped at the margins of formal state control. Ultimately, these popular - or to use a modern term, proletarian - pseudo-coins were the everyday currency of those who kept the baths running: most likely slaves. In their bold imagery and function, they express not just utility, but a kind of pride: currencies made by the working class, for the working class.

The dolphin carries Phalantus, the naked Spartan exile, safely across the sea and brings him to Italy in accordance with the Delphic oracle, which commanded him to found the city “where he would see rain fall from a clear sky.” There he founded Taras (Taranto).

Centered and well struck in high relief on a good metal. One might say Almost Fdc. Very Rare and among the finest specimens known. From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005. The ear was Metapontum’s emblem, reflecting the central role of agriculture in the city’s economy, with barley as its principal crop and hallmark. The dolphin, a recurring motif in Greek coastal iconography, symbolized the city’s maritime identity and prosperity. Nestled between the Ionian Sea and two rivers, Metapontum relied on the sea for trade and sustenance; the dolphin thus conveyed protection, good fortune, and safe navigation. In Greek mythology, it was also sacred to Apollo, further underscoring its association with guidance and salvation.

Lot # 160 - Greek Asia. Mysia, Kyzikos. Fourrée Hemihekte, 500-450 BC. D/ Bearded head of a hero (Herakles?) right, wearing a helmet in the shape of the scalp of a sea monster. R/ Quadripartite incuse square with windmill pattern. Cf. SNG von Aulock 7291 (hekte). AV/AE. 1.55 g. 10 mm. RRR. Very rare. Interesting study coin. Good VF. The male head on this coin has been given a number of identifications: as Herakles wearing a lion skin (von Aulock), as Perseus (?) wearing a griffin head helmet, and as a hero (Hurter & Liewald). It is, of course, more complicated! The helmet bears a fin-like crest, pointed ears, a flat nose and a rather wide open, rounded mouth. If it were a griffin it would have had to have the usual knob on the forehead and it certainly would not have a flat nose. Now it could possibly be a so-called lion griffin, but such creatures did not have long, pointed ears as this has. In fact, what this helmet seems to be is the scalp of a ketos , a sea monster from Greek mythology: Perseus killed the ketos that was about to devour Andromeda and Herakles killed another one, which was going to eat Hesione. The helmet shape is quite similar to the head of the ketos on the Caeretan hydria in the Niarchos collection (especially the ‘ears’) and, if that is the case, the hero’s full beard probably allows us to identify him as Herakles. Perseus can appear with a beard, but he often does not; at Kyzikos he is shown beardless on von Fritze 65, thus making it most likely that this does not depict him.
