Ephesos, a major center of Artemis worship in the Greek world, featured powerful symbols on its coinage—most notably the bee, stag, and palm. The bee, originally linked to an Anatolian goddess later identified as Artemis, became so integral to the cult that her priestesses were known as “honey bees.” The stag, sacred to the goddess, symbolized her role as guardian of wildlife, while the palm recalled her mythological birth beneath a palm tree on Delos. Together, these emblems reflect the city's deep religious identity and its unique devotion to Artemis.

Renowned in antiquity for its fine wine and as the principal cult center of the fertility god Priapus, Lampsakos stood out for its remarkable economic vitality in the Classical period. In her masterful 1924 study, Agnes Baldwin Brett identified 41 distinct stater issues struck over just five or six decades in the 4th century BC—testimony to the city’s intense monetary activity. The steady output of these gold coins, likely supported by local mining, reveals a city thriving under both Spartan and later Persian control. Their obverses are consistently marked by a wide typological variety, yet the winged horse—Pegasus—remains a constant on the reverse, serving as a timeless civic emblem. Its powerful design ensured instant recognition in antiquity and continues to define the series’ desirability today. Few coinages better reflect the blend of prosperity, myth, and iconographic brilliance than that of Lampsakos.

This attribution is tentatively based on the reverse type large A, which strongly point to the mint of Argos in the Peloponnesos. However, the late style of Athena's head, combined with the laurel wreath on the reverse, suggests an issue struck for the Achaean League: a federation of city-states in the northern Peloponnese, formed to promote mutual defense and economic cooperation, particularly active during the Hellenistic period.

Unlike many other Greek cities tied to archaic numismatic traditions, Ainos had the freedom to innovate from the outset of its coinage. The city’s engravers made full use of this liberty, first introducing a profile of Hermes—the city’s patron deity—with a caduceus on the reverse, later replaced by a goat symbolizing his pastoral role. This beautifully struck coin features one of the finest depictions of Hermes, whose front-facing portrait exudes a calm nobility reminiscent of 15th-century Florentine aristocrats. With flowing curls and his petasus, he evokes the proud elegance seen in Gozzoli’s Procession of the Magi, making this small coin a true masterpiece of classical portraiture.
