Corinthian-type staters were struck on several occasions in the history of Syracuse: under Timoleon, during the reign of Agathokles, and later under Hieron II, at a weight of approximately 5.5 grams. This latter weight matches that of the silver octobols issued in Syracuse by Pyrrhos, yet it does not conform to the traditional Syracusan weight standard based on the litra. Hieron’s adoption of Corinthian types may have represented a transitional measure, and this coinage was likely discontinued prior to the outbreak of the First Punic War.

This beautifully preserved tetradrachm of Leontini was struck during a rare moment of peace in the late 5th century BC, between the fall of the Deinomenid dynasty and the rise of Dionysios I. A Chalkidian foundation, Leontini honored Apollo—patron of the Chalkidians and their colonies—with an obverse depicting the god in an unusually delicate and almost nymph-like form, distinguished by his laurel wreath. On the reverse, a lion’s head—playing on the city’s name—is surrounded by four barley grains, alluding to the fertility of the Leontine plain and arranged in a circular pattern that recalls the dolphins encircling Arethusa on contemporary Syracusan coinage.

Struck under Syracusan rule, this finely executed tetradrachm from Leontini reflects both artistic mastery and civic assertion. The slow quadriga and Apollo’s laurel-crowned head echo Syracusan models, while the lion—appearing on both sides—serves as a proud punning emblem of the city. The design is deeply influenced by the celebrated “Demareteion Master,” though some scholars argue for a later hand working in his style. Regardless, the result is one of the finest examples of early Sicilian numismatic art, blending realism, symbolism, and political nuance in a coin of striking beauty and power.
