The oldest specimens were found in Ephesus in the sanctuary of Artemis, considered one of the seven wonders of the world, rebuilt by Kroisos from about 560 BC. The coins found were globules of precious metal, some without any markings, others with striations or with various types and punch marks, with values corresponding to the weight of the Stater and its fractions. The association of unminted specimens with actual coins indicates that the votive deposition dates to the time of the transition from the use of metal pieces by weight to those secured by an official mark. The pottery finds in the excavation allowed these coins to be dated precisely to the period of the reconstruction of the building by Kroisos, thus between the last decades of the seventh century and about 560. The most common pieces, bearing a lion's head or paw, are attributed to Lydia. Among the present series, coins depicting the stag and sometimes bearing the name Phanes are generally attributed to Ephesus or Halikarnassos. The otherwise unknown name appears on Staters and 1/3 Staters with the full-length stag. These coins declare themselves to be the personal symbol of a certain Phanes, following a pattern reminiscent of votive inscriptions and seals in which objects speak in the first person, representing a kind of signature. The new minting technique seems to be likely to parallel the older use of engraved stones to leave the imprint of a private or public authority, acting as a guarantee on pieces of metal of predetermined weight and binding them inextricably to the authority that produced them.
