Lot # 414 - AUGUSTUS (27 BC-14 AD). Denarius. Rome. Petronius Turpilianus, moneyer. Obv: CAESAR AVGVSTVS. Bare head right.Rev: TVRPILIANVS III VIR. Tarpeia standing facing, both hands raised, buried to her waist in shields.RIC² 299.After the abduction of their women, the Sabines, led by King Titus Tatius (depicted on the obverse), managed to take possession of the Capitoline Hill thanks to the betrayal of Tarpeia, who opened the gates of the citadel to them. There are two versions of this myth, told by Propertius and Livy. The former presents the vestal virgin's betrayal as a consequence of her love for the king of the Sabines. According to Livy, however, Tarpeia was bribed by the enemy's gold: when she went outside the walls to draw water for the cult of Vesta, she was captured and punished for her behavior, ending up buried and crushed by the Sabine shields as illustrated on the reverse of the Denarius. In reconstructing the appearance of the lighthouse, the description of Strabo, who speaks of a multi-story tower built of white stone, dedicated by Sostratus of Knidos to ensure the safety of sailors, is essential. Ancient representations of the lighthouse are rather general and dated to the 1st-2nd centuries AD. For this purpose numismatic documentation proves the most useful. On coins, such as this Antoninus's drachm, some essential features of the monument can be recognized, such as the square plan of the upper lower body, equipped with overlapping windows. The two upper levels, often reduced to one, were octagonal and cylindrical in shape respectively. On the top was located the large burning fire and sculptural groups. Ares standing left, holding spear and parazonium; at feet, goat standing left.RPC II 2779A (1 specimen); Dattari -.Extremely rareEgypt was structured into districts called ‘nomoi’, territories that orbited around a main city, united by the worship of a specific local divinity. Each nome had its own main god and often generated antagonism with the gods of neighboring districts, often giving rise to fierce enmities and fights. Only three Egyptian cities were outside the nomes: Alexandria, Naucratis, and Ptolemais. This system dated back to the Pharaonic period and continued until Roman times, undergoing changes in the number and names of the districts. Under Alexander the Great, an Egyptian nomarch remained at the head of the nome, but from the early Ptolemies onwards, he was replaced by a Greek military governor (strategos). In Roman times, between Domitian and Marcus Aurelius, a series of coins was struck that reproduced the ‘nomoi’ with different personifications, accompanied by the image or distinctive sign of the sacred animal peculiar to each district, or by the statue of the main deity worshipped in the district.
