Lampsacus was the main center of this cult, and from there it spread and flourished, particularly during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. According to the most common tradition, Priapus was the son of Dionysus and Aphrodite. It is said that he was born a horrible child, as a result of his mother’s beauty and lust, which Hera wished to punish in an exemplary manner. Where he was worshipped, in the Hellespont, the animal offered to him was the donkey, which the Greeks regarded as a symbol of lust. Priapus was worshipped as the god of fertility, protector of gardens, vineyards, and male virility. The first fruits of the fields and gardens were also offered to him, along with libations of milk and honey.
