About VF/VF. Dorestad was one of the three mints (Arles, Dorestad, and Quentovic) that had already struck portrait deniers under Charlemagne (768–814). Only twelve mints issued coins bearing the bust of Emperor Louis. While the obverse of these portrait issues of Louis the Pious—probably struck between 814 and 818—shows the ruler in paludamentum (general’s cloak) with a laurel crown, the reverses name the mint and symbolically indicate its “status.” Thus, the cities of Arles, Orléans, Pavia, Sens, Strasbourg, Toulouse, and Treviso display a city gate; the mining town of Melle is marked by a pair of dies; and the port cities of Quentovic and Dorestad are represented by a ship.

In the background, the guillotine and the crowd evoke the tragic destiny of the royal family, while the poignant inscription ‘An est dolor par dolori nostro’ (‘See if there be any sorrow like unto our sorrow’) underlines the profound sense of loss. A masterpiece of medallic art and a powerful testimony to one of history’s most dramatic moments.
