Lotto n. 5066 - Tiberius 14-37. Bronze Sestertius 35/36 Rome 24.4 g 65.1 x 36.7 mm Triumphal Quadriga // SC. BMC 113; Coh. 66; RIC² 60. Uncut The empty quadriga likely alludes to Lucius Vitellius' actions against the Parthians, although no decree granting him the signa triumphalia is known. The future emperor's father had been sent by Tiberius to Syria as legate Augusti pro praetore, since the Parthian king Artabanus III had installed his son Arsaces in Armenia. Lucius Vitellius was enormously successful; not only did he succeed in installing a king in Armenia by favor of Rome, but also in installing a new king in Parthia itself. Artabanus III was forced to flee to the Scythians.

Fair, brown surfaces; countermarks are VF. From the Estate of Wayne C. Phillips; Ex Jörg Müller Collection (Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 219, 30 September, 2009), lot 432.D.W. MacDowell and A.V.M. Hubrecht discuss the countermarked bronzes from the Rhineland in “Countermarks on the Aes of Claudius from Nijmegen,” Proceedings of the XIth International Numismatic Congress, Vol. 2, pp. 265-7. There appear to be three distinct variations of the TI AV countermark. One appears solely on asses of Agrippa, and is probably contemporary with the reign of Tiberius. The other two are found on aes of Caligula and Claudius, and are localized in Upper Germany and the lower Rhine. MacDowell and Hubrecht conclude that the countermarks at Nijmegen were applied to lightweight products of a local mint, and indicated that the coins were to be accepted at the full weight standard of the Rome mint issues struck under Tiberius (hence the countermark, TI[berius] AV[gustus]).

An active campaign of persecution against local Christians by Maximinus II reached its height during 310-313 the eastern cities in Nicomedia, Antioch, and Alexandria. Christians were subject to confiscation of land and property, and expelled from the cities; Churches were closed and ransacked. These three major mint cities struck a series of small bronzes honoring the old Greco-Roman gods - Jupiter, Apollo, Tyche, and Serapis among them. The persecutions subsided in AD 313 as a result of the Edict of Milan, jointly issued by Constantine and Licinius - the senior emperors - which proclaimed a policy of religious freedom, and returned confiscated property to the Christians.
