Lot # 438 - Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes – Attendance Jewel, 1980 (36.40 mm, 29.98 g). Maker: Thomas Fattorini Ltd., London & Birmingham Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1979–80) A well-crafted and attractive Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (R.A.O.B.) attendance jewel, presented in 1980, executed in gilt and enamel over sterling silver, and suspended from its original light-blue and white ribbon. This jewel represents the modern, refined style of late 20th-century RAOB regalia. The top bar features a gilt scroll engraved with the Order’s motto, attached to a crisp ribbed ribbon in alternating blue and white. Hanging below is the distinctive six-armed star badge, encircled by a laurel wreath symbolising merit and dedication. At the centre of the star appears a lion’s head in relief, surrounded by a blue enamel band inscribed with the RAOB motto: NEC MORTALIUM OMNIBUS HORIS SAPIT (“Not even the wisest man is wise at all hours”) Reverse The reverse is neatly engraved: Presented to Bro. J. Woodhouse for Attendance 26th Nov. 1980 Along the lower edge appear crisp London silver hallmarks confirming: Sterling silver (lion passant) London assay (leopard’s head) Date-letter for 1979–80 Maker’s mark: T. FATTORINI LTD. The long pin-back suspension fitting remains intact and secure. Condition: Very Fine. Ribbon clean and bright; enamel fully intact; gilt surfaces sharp with gentle patina; engraving clear and elegant; hallmarks crisp; suspension original and complete. A handsome and appealing RAOB presentation jewel, valued for its sterling-silver construction, personalised inscription, and excellent overall preservation. Maker: Thomas Fattorini Ltd., London & Birmingham Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1980–81) A finely produced Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (R.A.O.B.) attendance jewel, presented in 1981, crafted in gilt metal over sterling silver with deep blue enamel and suspended from its original two-tone blue ribbon. This jewel represents the later 20th-century RAOB design, combining traditional iconography with crisp modern workmanship. The gilt top bar is engraved SERVICE LODGE, supporting a ribbed ribbon in alternating light and dark blue. The pendant features an ornate gilt frame decorated with laurel sprays and scrolls, topped by a green enamel RAOB cartouche. At the centre appears the classic RAOB lion’s head within a blue enamel ring inscribed: NEC MORTALIUM OMNIBUS HORIS SAPIT (“Not even the wisest man is wise at all hours”) The enamel is bright and well applied, giving the jewel strong visual contrast. Reverse The reverse bears a clear presentation inscription: Bro. L. CRINT KOM. for Attendance 1981 Below the inscription are crisp London silver hallmarks confirming: Sterling silver (lion passant) London assay (leopard’s head) Date-letter for 1980–81 Maker’s mark: T. FATTORINI LTD. A long, original pin-back suspension is present and in functional condition. Condition: Very Fine.
