Here we have the second bronze numeral minted by Cleopatra VII with her own portrait on the obverse, a coin with a value of 40, halved compared to that of the previous no. 189 in the collection, but from a numismatic point of view even rarer than that. It is generally slightly corroded, but the portrait is of fine style, intact and legible in every detail.

This important and rare bronze coin, like the next no. 190 in the collection, is highly sought after regardless of its state of preservation for two main reasons: firstly, it bears on the obverse the famous portrait, courtly but strongly realistic, of Cleopatra VII, the last queen of Egypt of the Ptolemaic dynasty and historically one of the most prestigious personalities of the ancient world. Secondly, it bears witness to the transition from the money system of the Làgids to the Roman imperial system, as can be seen from specimen no. 191 in the collection where Augustus, having conquered Egypt in 30 B.C., in his first monetary issues, exactly reproduces the forms and images of Cleopatra's. Our specimen can be considered of excellent artistic quality and conservation for the coin type. Its numerical value, usually and improperly defined as 80 drachms, should be more correctly indicated as ‘80’ units. Pleasing iridescent cabinet tone. Well-centered specimen. Minimal flattening on the eagle's chest and insignificant area of porosity on the reverse. However, almost as struck.

Lot # 184 - Time of the Caesar's Civil War. Identification tag. Circa mid-1st century BC (Bone, 56.87 x 25.84 mm). Inscription on one side: HOSTILIVS / SASERNA. Cf. Crawford, RRC, 448 Series. Excellent state of preservation and fine paleography for the period. Four small nail holes at the corners indicate it was meant to be affixed. The gens Hostilia was an ancient patrician family, already present in the time of Romulus and most likely among the original hundred gentes mentioned by the historian Livy. The Saserna branch is known for its political and military support of Julius Caesar. Notable members include Gaius, Publius, and most famously Lucius, who, according to some sources, died at the Battle of Pharsalus. Lucius Saserna struck coin issues during the Civil War between Caesar and Pompey, all marked by pro-Caesarian propaganda exalting Caesar’s victorious Gallic campaigns.

Lot # 178 - Time of the First Triumvirate. Tessera Nummularia. Dated 24 February 56 BC (Bone, 51.37 x 9.64 mm). Inscription on all four sides: CHILO / MVRRI / SP(pectavit) A(nte) D(iem) VI K(alendas) MAR(tii) / CN COR(elio) L MAR(cio) (Consulibus). Translation: Inspection carried out by Chilo, slave of Murrus, on the sixth day before the Calends of March, in the year of the consulship of Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus and Lucius Marcius Philippus. Pierced at the top to be tied to a bag containing coins. Composed of two joined fragments. Very Rare, with around 150 known examples worldwide — each bearing a different inscription. From a British private collection, later passing into a Swiss collection in the early 2000s. It may correspond to the specimen once owned by lawyer Tito Cini of Montevarchi, reportedly discovered in Tuscany (Fiesole) in 1897. That piece later disappeared and was never recorded again — although it is presumed to have been intact. This is a "tessera nummularia", carved from bone, featuring a central perforation that allowed it to be tied directly to a bag of coins. Such objects were not intended for circulation but served as a guarantee of the verification of coins by professional money-changers or assayers (nummularii) in ancient Rome. They often certified the weight, purity, and authenticity of a batch of currency. Tesserae like this represent a rare glimpse into the control mechanisms of Roman financial practices. Their utilitarian nature and material suggest daily use in commercial settings.
