Maker: Unmarked (typical provincial die-struck medal) Material: Gilt bronze; original tricolour ribbon Period: c. 1880s–1920s A handsome and historically significant Cheshire Masonic Charity Medal, suspended from its original red–white–blue moiré ribbon and featuring attractive gilt surfaces. This type of medal was presented in recognition of contributions to Cheshire’s Masonic charitable institutions, whose origins date back to the early 19th century. Obverse The obverse displays a detailed arrangement of symbolic devices: Square and compasses within a laurel wreath The heraldic shield of the County of Cheshire, incorporating three wheatsheaves A second shield with Masonic and civic charges A scroll beneath bearing the Latin motto: AUXILIO TACE VIDET The engraving and relief work are crisp, characteristic of the high-quality die-striking typical of provincial regalia makers of the era. Reverse The reverse features an allegorical classical scene representing Charity: a central robed figure seated with children, flanked by attendant figures holding symbolic objects. At the base appears the inscription: INSTITUTED 1813 Above the medal, the suspension mount forms an arched gilt header reading: CHESHIRE MASONIC CHARITY The heavy gauge and deeply modelled relief emphasize the prestige associated with these medals. Lot # 276 - Royal Arch Chapter Jewel, Prince of Wales Chapter No. 1053 (37.67 x 28.74 mm, 16.89 g). Royal Arch Chapter Jewel, Prince of Wales Chapter No. 1053. Gilt and enamel jewel suspended from a deep claret ribbed silk ribbon, surmounted by a curved bar inscribed “FOUNDER” in blue enamel, with applied hexagram device to the ribbon. The obverse features the Royal Arch triple tau within a circular enamelled band inscribed “Prince of Wales Chapter No. 1053”, with additional enamelled scroll below. The reverse plain, retaining original suspension ring and fittings. Maker’s and metal marks present. A well-made and attractive Royal Arch jewel, of classic late 19th to early 20th century form, retaining strong colour and clear definition. Condition: Very good, light surface wear and patina consistent with age; ribbon with minor wear. Period: Late 19th – early 20th century.

Lot # 275 - East Lancashire Masonic Benevolent Institution Jewel (40.35 x 53.01 mm, 33.31 g). East Lancashire Masonic Benevolent Institution Incorporated jewel, gilt and enamel, suspended from its original pale blue ribbed silk ribbon, fitted with an ornate gilt suspension scroll and retaining its original pin fastening. The obverse with a circular gilt medallion with blue enamel border inscribed “EAST LANCASHIRE MASONIC BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION INCORPORATED”, enclosing a stork standing on a pedestal before radiating sunbursts in high relief, the lower scroll bearing the motto “PATRIAE FIDELIS AMICISQUE”, executed in gilt and enamel. The reverse plain gilt, stamped “KENNINGSON LONDON”, with central fixing point visible, mounted on a gilt backing plate with original pin. A well-made late 19th / early 20th century Masonic benevolent jewel, retaining strong enamel colour and its original ribbon and suspension, and displaying fine detail throughout. Condition: Very good, with light surface wear and patina consistent with age; enamels intact; ribbon clean and well preserved.

Lot # 274 - Everton Lodge No. 823 – “Jubilee 1860–1910” Past Master’s Jewel (gilt silver, 33.18 mm, 28.33 g). In a burgundy leather fitted case, gilt-tooled to lid, by G. Kenning & Son, Liverpool. A fine gilt silver and enamel Past Master’s jewel for Everton Lodge No. 823, suspended from its original olive-green moiré ribbon and topped by a textured gilt bar inscribed: JUBILEE 1860–1910 The obverse displays a circular blue enamel border reading EVERTON LODGE No 823, enclosing a finely painted central scene of a tower with bridge and water (in the manner of a lodge “view” badge). Above the medallion is the Square and Compasses device in gilt. Reverse: The reverse is clearly engraved to the recipient, including: “W Bro R. M. Cow P.M., P.P.G.S. of W” and the key date line: “INITIATED DECEMBER 1874” Hallmarks and maker’s stamp are present near the lower area (as visible in the photo), consistent with Kenning production. Condition: Very good. Enamel bright; painted centre well preserved with only light age speckling; ribbon with normal wear/creasing; gilt silver with light handling marks; fittings secure. Case with expected age wear.

Lot # 273 - Grand Middlesex Banner Jewel, Presented 8 December 1854. (39.53 x 50.34 mm, 27.61 g). Grand Middlesex Banner jewel, gilt and enamel, suspended from its original vertically ribbed purple and yellow silk ribbon, with gilt scroll suspension. The obverse with a circular gilt and blue enamelled banner inscribed “GRAND MIDDLESEX BANNER”, enclosing a central gilt shield charged with a kangaroo in relief, surmounted by a crown. The reverse finely engraved “Presented to Bro. E. G. Selby”, with the presentation date “8th Dec. 1854”, further stamped “L. Simpson London” beneath, retaining its original long pin fitting. An early and highly attractive mid-19th century Masonic banner jewel, notable for its clear dated presentation, strong enamel colouring and well-preserved original ribbon. Condition: Very good, with light surface wear and patina consistent with age; enamels crisp; ribbon well preserved. Date: 8 December 1854.

Lot # 272 - Masonic Past Master Jewel Mid-19th Century (dated 1844–1848)** (46.30 mm, 55.07 g). Maker: L. Simpson, London Material: Gilt metal with enamel A finely executed Masonic Past Master jewel, surmounted by a crowned suspension and formed as a circular gilt medal with enamelled details. The obverse centres on a raised gilt ram’s head, set against a pale blue enamel ground, surrounded by a deep cobalt blue enamelled ring bearing the Latin motto “NEO MORTALIUM OMNIBUS HORIS SAPIT” in gilt lettering. The piece is further framed by a laurel wreath border, all surmounted by a detailed royal crown. The reverse is engraved: “Presented to Bro. J. J. Bonar, K.O.M. for Services Rendered as Prov. G. Warden 1844–48” Below, the maker’s mark L. SIMPSON, LONDON is struck, along with additional hallmarks confirming manufacture and period. The medal retains its original suspension loop. Condition: Very Fine. Gilt surfaces with expected age-related wear and softening; enamel largely intact with minor surface marks. Engraving remains clear and legible. An attractive and historically interesting example with documented provincial service.

After the battles of Castiglione and Peschiera, Napoleon evacuated his troops from the Veneto to move them toward Mantua, considered one of the most important fortresses in Europe. The forces of the Corsican general pressed on Mantua, and after bloody fighting, the war council and commander Wurmser agreed to the capitulation of the Virgilian city. (Cf. E. Medal for the construction of the sluice gates on the River Mincio at Governolo near Mantova. 1756 (Bronze, 47.07 mm, 39.27 g). HIST DE LA REVOLUTION DE L'EMPIRE DE LA RESTAURATION ET DE LA MON DE 1830, Laureate head of Napoleon Bonaparte right; below, PUBLIÉ PAR POURRAT FRÈRES / A PARIS. Rev. Napoleon’s coffin is carried by his followers; on center, France holding laurel and olive branches and a long garland while an angel holds the letter N on an altar; behind, the Invalides and, in the distance, the Belle-Poule; in exergue, MONTAGNY FECIT. Vivien, "Histoire générale de la Révolution française, de l'Empire, de la Restauration, de la Monarchie de 1830", was published by Pourrat Frères in 1844. This medal was most likely an advertising piece commissioned by the publisher Pourrat Frères.

Bramsen 731. Cf. Ricciardi, Supp. n. 279. About Fdc. Very Rare. In 1808, Gioacchino Murat was appointed King of Naples by Napoleon and was already known as ‘Gioacchino Napoleone’. Thanks to his good looks, sanguine character, and physical courage, he was admired by the Neapolitans. During his short reign, Murat founded and initiated major public works. This plaquette, and another very similar one representing Carolina Bonaparte, the wife of Gioacchino Murat, were commissioned in honor of their appointment as the royal couple ruling Naples and Sicily.

Lot # 702 - PB Tessera. Late Roman. D/ Figure riding on prancing lion right; all within double linear border. R/ Blank with big rectangular loop. AE. 0.57 g. 13 mm. Partly missing. About VF. The depiction of Cupid riding on a lion is often a theme of medals and other works of art commemorating a wedding. The origins of the subject lie in the fables of Aesop (The Lion in Love) as a cautionary tale against taking advice from your adversary, which was reinterpreted in the Renaissance to represent the idea of 'omnia vincit amor' to illustrate that love can tame even the fiercest nature. With the lion of the original tale, a cautionary element is added to warn newlyweds against giving up too much of themselves for love. The theme was popularised by the Romantic movement of the 19th century in various forms of art, including paintings, statues, and literature.
